TIPS: How to Set Custom Hotkeys for the Selection Filter in 3ds Max

  1. When working on projects with many objects, you often need to switch between different Selection Filters to easily target the right category of objects — for example, selecting only Geometry, or only Lights. The problem is that this action is normally only accessible through the mouse, via a dropdown on the toolbar, which is inconvenient and breaks your workflow if you need to do it repeatedly.

3ds Max doesn’t natively support assigning hotkeys to switch the Selection Filter. To work around this, you can use a custom MAXScript that creates individual commands for each filter type, then bind hotkeys to those commands using the software’s built-in Hotkey Editor.

    Benefits of this approach:

    • Switch filters instantly with a keypress, without leaving the keyboard
    • Speeds up workflow in large scenes with many object types
    • No need to open toolbar menus or dropdowns
    • Simple, lightweight setup with no performance impact, compatible with multiple versions of 3ds Max

    Steps:

    1. Open 3ds Max, go to Scripting on the toolbar, select Run Script…, and point it to the filter-switching script (e.g., Selection Filter Hotkeys.ms).
    2. Go to Customize → Hotkey Editor.
    3. Look for entries named “Set Select Filter: [Filter Name]” corresponding to each filter type (Geometry, Shapes, Lights, Cameras, Helpers, Warps).
    4. Assign your preferred hotkey to each entry. Choose key combinations not already used by other 3ds Max functions to avoid conflicts.
    5. Save your settings and test by pressing the newly assigned keys in the viewport.

Once set up, you can switch filters instantly with a single keypress, making your modeling workflow noticeably smoother and faster.
